Tips on How to Make Yourself a Better Writer

We have heard about great writers like John Grisham, James Patterson, and others; we are inspired by them and desire to be like them. We all know this is not easy. It takes time and expertise to reach these great heights. There some ways that you can improve and become the writer that you have always wanted to be. Here are some tips.

Read good books

Immerse yourself into reading good books by writers that inspire you. Read a lot of them. By reading you immerse yourself in a universe that is filled with ideas and creativity. When you surround yourself with brilliantly written material, some of that brilliance will rub off on you. Mix this with a little touch of your own personality and character then you have an original, very brilliantly written item.

Get yourself a notebook

Get yourself a sturdy notebook you can carry around and take notes in. Ideas happen anywhere and if you pay attention by taking note of events which happen you might be surprised to find a well formed idea, just there in your note book waiting to be exploited.

Visit theatres and watch movies

I know this may sound passive as you only sit there and get entertained but when you think about it: theatres and movies are a showcase of creativity; a good writer needs to have a fair share. Besides being entertained, movies and theatres may give ideas and ignite your creative sense. Watching movies and going to theatres is also a way of relaxing as well as refreshing your mind which something that writers need from time to time.

Write, write, and write

To be good at anything you need to do it a lot. You know as someone once said that a lot of practice makes perfect. So for you to be good at writing you need to write a lot and on different topics.

Make Your Writing Earn Money For You

Do you love writing? Is writing your passion? Is it impossible for you to spend a second without thinking of writing something? Maybe it’s about time to make your writing earn some money for you. Whether it’s poetry, blogging, journal writing, academic writing, e-book writing, article writing, you can make much more money with your passion. So, how can you make your writing earn money for you?

First, look for different writing platforms where you can exchange your writing pieces for money. There are so many websites where you can write poetry or articles and get paid for doing it. Sign up in different freelance writing sites and create contractor profiles. Once you have signed up, look for different assignments you can handle and do them. Depending on your writing expertise you can either venture into academic writing, content writing, article writing, etc.

Secondly, look for writing competitions which offer writers platforms to practice their creativity. There are all sorts of writing competitions on the internet. Sign up as a contestant in any of these competitions and participate. Luckily you might win and end up earning a lot of money.

Third, if you are a novelist and it’s too hard to get published, you can get into the field of e-book writing. E-books are the new generation of novels. The biggest advantage of e-books is that they are easy to download and authors don’t need to waste a lot of money looking for publishers to publish their books.

Note that, if you want your writing career to become successful, make sure you always write on enticing topics which attract the readers. On the other hand, make sure you write about a topic you are passionate about or you are an expert in. If you put the above pointers into use, it’s very likely you will be making a lot of money with your writing.

Become an Exceptional Writer (How to Write a Compelling Piece of Writing)

Article writing is a task that could be rewarding personally, socially and even financially. With writing you get personal fulfillment in letting out your inner thoughts and feelings. It also gives you some social status if what you write is a common experience to the people around you and with the spring up of the new media in the internet you can make a few bucks for yourself.

But how do you manage to make your writing irresistible to your readers?

1. Use an informal tone

Using simple and concise language makes it easy to connect with your desired audience. It is easier and fun to read an article that does not make you refer to the dictionary after every line you read or leaves you wondering what the writer meant when he wrote a certain statement. Also readers prefer reading an article that is entertaining, so don’t be afraid to throw in a joke as you write.

2. The title should be interesting

Most readers will read an article simply because the title has attracted them. Appealing to the reader’s curiosity is a one way that is sure to work. Using catchy titles with popular phrases will grab the attention of readers. In as much as you want to capture the reader looking for no specific information your title should also attract other readers looking for specific information.

3. Know your readers

Once you have a target reader, research their likes and dislikes; then it would be easy for you to know what they expect from your writing. Develop a basic outline for your work. Your points and sub points should be systematically arranged so that your reader will flow though without wondering what should come before what. It is important to have order in your writing. The flow should be consistent with the topic or title.

Fall Ideas for Writing

When the weather starts to change, it can be very inspiring. Fall ideas for writing seem to just be ripe enough to pluck out of the slowly cooling air.

The easiest and perhaps most used fall idea for writing is change or turning. Fall can be one of the most dramatic changes for a region and those changes can be inspiring. Just like a leaf changes colors from a plain green to a burnt orange or catch your eye red, people go through dramatic changes as well. You can write about the most dramatic changing point of your life thus far. Did you get married or have a child in the past year? Did a change in job direction or faith have you feeling like an autumn leaf falling to the ground as you took a blind leap?

For children, fall ideas for writing can be more abstract. Ask them why they think the leaves are changing. Does it have something to do with the cold weather? And why is the weather getting colder? You’ll be amazed at what a little mind can think of with just a simple question.

Another fall idea for writing is reflection. Soon after fall begins, the holiday seasons start which will be a time of thanks. Reflect on what you have been thankful for in the past year and write about that. Whatever you do choose as your idea, just keep writing!

Be a Better Writer Through Journal Writing

To be a better writer you have to get yourself writing. Common sense, right? We may know it in our head, but sometimes it can be hard to just sit down and get yourself practicing. After all, what do you write about?

A great way to get yourself writing is to have a journal. It may seem awkward and strange to start journaling if you haven’t done it before, but you can take a lot of different approaches to get yourself comfortable.

A good way to get yourself going is to have a gratitude journal (this can be good for your mental well-being as well). Every day just sit down and write at least one thing that you are grateful for. It could be something that happened that day, or someone you know. Once you get the ball rolling you’ll find it easier and easier to find things to write about.

This can be great writing practice because it gets you into the habit of expressing your thoughts and feelings. As you write about things close to your heart, you’ll find yourself wanting to capture just the right words to describe your feelings. The more you do it, the better you’ll be at picking just the right words to really illustrate how you feel about something or someone.

Write When It Is Quiet

The best time to write is when it is quiet. When your environment is quiet, there will be less distractions. Distractions can interrupt your thought processes and affect how well you write. For some people, noise may be no problem at all. But, for many a quiet atmosphere will allow for more free thinking and writing.

Plan a time when the house or office is quiet to write important pieces. This will allow you to "hear" yourself think. Turn the phone off if you have to. There is nothing like being "on a roll" when writing only to find a phone call comes in and takes you away from this important time.

If you have children in the home, get up early to write before the kids wake. This will also allow you some free thinking and writing time. If you are working from home on writing assignments, have quiet activities for your children when you are working.

Eliminate the distractions! Find the best time to write!

Writing Daily

Let's face it - the more you write, the better you can become. When you first begin writing, it may seem akward and a chore. This is how I felt during my high school days. Then, I decided to go back to college and earn my master's degree nearly 15 years after completing my bachelor's degree.

My master's degree involved massive amounts of writing. I actually learned to enjoy it! I now work from home as a writer offering services to a wide number of individuals and businesses. The more I write, the easier it has become.

The more topics I spend time writing about, the easier it becomes for me when another assignment comes around which is related to the content. For example, I never really thought I would write articles about how to use mosaic tiles in the home. Now that I have spent time researching and writing on the subject, the more comfortable I am when the time comes to write more!

Write as often as you can and you can perfect your writing skills. You will also become more comfortable with writing for others!

Write With Passion

Are you passionate about writing? Do you love to share with others? Writing is a great way to communicate with the world! When you are excited about what you are sharing with others, then the readers will "feel" your enthusiasm and be drawn into your writing piece!

If you will think of writing as "painting" a picture, then you will be one step ahead in creating a fine piece of work. What do you want the reader to feel? What do you want them to see? What do you want them to hear?

Convey information to the reader which is useful for them. If you are talking about gardening, then adding tips for watering the lawn will cause confusion. Think of your target idea and give it the support it needs.

When you are finished writing your draft, take a break from it. Come back to it with a fresh mind. Read the writing out loud to yourself. If the writing reads smoothly and covers the topic at hand, then you have a great start!

Family Writing Rituals

Want to encourage your child to love writing?  Begin a tradition of family writing rituals (although you don't need to call them that!) and watch the interest blossom!

One of my favorite family writing rituals is Game Night.  We choose only games that have to do with writing or spelling (although the kids haven't seemed to notice yet) like Scrabble or Boggle and just have fun.  The kids are developing skills without even realizing it and, as parents, we are encouraging family solidarity.

Another family writing ritual that has been successful for our family is letter writing.  We write letters to say thanks, to congratulate and even to apologize to one another.  This is important not just for practicing writing skills, but also to develop your child's interpersonal skills as well.

I recently read of another family writing ritual that I think would be extremely interesting for the kids---family blog writing.  Go online and create a blog through one of the free blogging sites and let each child be a "guest blogger" for a week.  Kids love to see their writing "published" and if they know parents, grandparents, cousins and other relatives can stop by and read their material they will be proud to make it the best it can be!

The Benefits of Writing on the Computer

Why should your child write a paper using a computer instead of pencil and paper?  If he or she is a middle schooler, this can prepare him for the online research and paper writing that awaits him in high school and college by teaching him valuable skills in keyboarding and online navigation.

Another benefit of writing on the computer is that the child can write (almost) as fast as his fingers can move.  Many children with poor graphomotor skills dislike writing simply because they cannot coordinate their thoughts with their movements.  Writing on the computer solves this problem easily.  An additional benefit of writing on the computer is that erasure is simple and easy and doesn't disrupt the flow of thoughts.  Many young writers are dismayed by cross-outs and erasures and seems to think this is evidence of the fact that writing is just "too hard".

One of the most significant benefits of writing on the computer is that you can critique the writing without using the dreaded red pen.  A child that struggles to complete a writing assignment only to see the paper covered in red marks is not likely to look forward to the next assignment.  By helping your child critique and edit his writing online you can avoid unnecessary discouragement while still prompting your child to be a careful, correct writer.
